An investigation into the effects of modernization and mechanization on the expectations placed on the “housewife” and the pressures associated with domestic life in the mid 20th century. In collaboration with five dancers, I developed a series of segments to focus the investigation: 1. Efficient Grooming, 2. Lawns and Leisure, 3. Mechanized Household Noises, 4. Fatigue as Enemy/ Resist Gravity, and 5. Paranoid Hygiene. By breaking down and challenging the human rhetoric of familiar or iconized movements and tasks we aim to blur the line between function and dysfunction, utopia and dystopia, and defy the expectations of domestic perfection.
